COMPETITIVE SWIMMING
Barracuda Swim Team
The Barracuda Swim Team is the Bangor Y's year-round competitive swimming program. Its primary focus is to provide a strong developmental program where everybody wins! Our approach to Swim Team has produced many champions. Each swimmer has the opportunity to develop values, self-discipline, time management skills, and self esteem, as well as proper stroke mechanics. The team looks for swimmers who are sincerely interested in challenging themselves in the areas of mental and physical training and competing at the state, regional, and even national level. Barracuda swimmers are evaluated by the coaching staff for placement in the appropriate training groups. For more information contact Eric Palmer, Head Coach or Holly Hatch, Director of Aquatics & Competitive Swimming at (207)941-2808 or barracudas@bangorY.org.

White Level
(Ages 10 & Younger)
The White Age Group level gives swimmers individual attention and a positive experience in competitive swimming. Children learn the basics of competitive swimming including starts, turns, stroke technique, and team spirit. To participate in this level, children must be able to swim 25 yards of freestyle and backstroke and have a familiarity with the breaststroke and butterfly. Swimmers are expected to attend practice 2-3 of 4 times offered each week.
Green & Gold Levels
(Ages 9 & Older)
The Green and Gold Age Group levels concentrate on stroke development while training for competition. They are learning that commitment, self-discipline, goal setting, and interval and mental training are important aspects of this training regimen. Workouts are designed according to group ability. Green level swimmers are expected to practice 3-4 times per week. Gold level swimmers are expected to practice 4-5 times per week.
Senior Level
(Ages 11 - 13)
The Senior Age Group level swimmers are preparing for the challenges of our Pre-National/National program, the highest level of Barracuda swimming. Workouts are designed according to group ability. Swimmers learn the responsibilities of swimming as a team of swimmers and not just as an individual swimmer. Commitment, self-discipline, goal setting, and interval and mental training are crucial to this group's training regimen. Senior Level swimmers are expected to practice 4-5 times per week.
Pre-National & National Levels
(Ages 13 & Older)
The Pre-National and National levels are the Barracuda Swim Team's highest levels of training. Many of these swimmers are preparing to train at the college level. Time management relative to academics and training is of the utmost importance. Swimmers train to compete at state and national level meets. Dry land training, time management, mental training, goal setting, and film analysis are part of this practice schedule. In addition to training as individual swimmers, at this level swimmers have learned to train as a team of swimmers, enabling them to be competitive as a group at this level of swimming. Pre-National level swimmers are expected to practice 5 times a week. National level swimmers are expected to attend all workouts offered (no less than 4 and as many as 7 workouts per week).
High School Level
The High School level option is offered only during the winter season for swimmers who participate on high school teams during the winter months. These swimmers participate at the Pre-National and National levels from September through November and pay 60% of the registration fee up front with the option to continue after December 1st for the remaining 40%.
