Coaching Staff
Eric Palmer
Head Coach
Coach's Bio
Eric joins the 2007-2008 Barracuda Swim Team as its Head Coach as a third generation swimmer and coach and a former Barracuda swimmer. Coming to the Bangor Y's competitive swimming program with stellar recommendations, he plans to pick up where his predecessors left off leading the team to many successful seasons and helping steer them in a positive direction that will help them achieve their personal and team goals. As both a former Barracuda swimmer and a UMaine alumni swimmer, Eric knows first hand that swimming can last a lifetime and hopes to share his love of swimming by motivating young Barracudas to follow the same lifelong path. By cultivating a fun, upbeat environment for the team, sharing his swimming experience through his enthusiastic personality, and teaching skills swimmers can apply both in and out of the pool throughout their lifetime, he hopes to see the excitement of being part of the Barracuda Swim Team continue to grow.
Debra Aucoin
Assistant Coach
Deb, whose own daughters are current members of the Bangor Y's Barracuda Swim Team and its Zoomers pre-competitive swimming program, began swimming competitively at the age of 6 for the Fall River YMCA in Massachusetts. She competed at many State and New England Championship meets and competed three consecutive years (1981-1983) at the YMCA Nationals Short Course Championships. She swam for and captained the Durfee High School swim team, who were state champions several years running. Continuing her swimming career at the University of Maine in Orono, Deb earned a degree in Physical Education and was the Assistant Swim Coach for both the Barracuda Swim Team, who then practiced at the Bangor Y's Coombs Pool at Hammond Street, and the Orono High School swim team. She continued on to earn her Masters of Education degree from UMaine in 1992. Deb has spent the past 20 years as a Physical Education teacher in the Hermon School system, presently at the K-4 level. She is excited to be back on deck in a coaching capacity, having missed it since she started teaching and focusing on her job and raising a family, and is energized to be able to work with children again both in and out of the water.
Bernard Plourde
Assistant Coach
Bernard, or "Bernie" as his friends call him, began his swimming career with the Barracuda Swim Team in the fall of 2000 and has been on staff at the Bangor Y as a Head Lifeguard, Swim Instructor, and Lifeguard Instructor since January 2007. During his first 5 years swimming as a Barracuda, he traveled 140 miles round trip several days a week to attend practices, meets, and other team functions. Several years ago, when his family relocated to the Bangor area, it allowed him to participate more extensively with the Barracuda Swimming program and to also be a part of the Bangor High School swim team. Now a college student, Bernie juggles school and work to teach lifeguard and swimming skills to hundreds of area youth. Transitioning from swimmer to Assistant Coach, with an aptitude for teaching Bernard hopes to share his love of swimming with present and future Barracuda swimmers.
