Leader in Training (LIT) and Counselor In Training (CIT)

The mission of the Leader In Training (LIT) and Counselor In Training (CIT) programs is to provide teens with a strong set of skills they can use as future
camp counselors and leaders in their communities. Camp Jordan's teen leadership development programs are some of the most comprehensive of their kind. The LIT program focuses on team-building, personal development, goal setting,
and community service. In the CIT program participants
learn the skills needed to care for children in a camp setting, develop
interpersonal relationships, and work alongside member of the camp staff.
Additionally, CITs will earn certifications in CPR, First Aid and Basic Water
Safety.
Many CIT and LIT participants were former Camp Jordan campers who later
return to become volunteers and staff members- thus providing the legacy
of energy and talent that has preserved over 100 years of Camp Jordan
tradition.
Leader In Training (LIT) Program

July 15 – August 04, For teens entering 10th grade
The LIT program focuses on
personal development, goal setting and learning to work as a member of a group.
The program prepares LITs for leadership roles at camp and in their communities.
The LITs will help to plan their own camping trip, which they
will enjoy for one week. Upon returning to camp LITs will live in cabins with
campers to shadow counselors and observe their leadership styles.
The LIT Program
Directors use an experiential learning approach to leadership development.
Participants will be challenged personally, and as a group, utilizing the Camp
Jordan Ropes Course for many of the physical and group-think challenges. Lessons
focus on the progression from personal development, to a person's role in a group, be
that a team, a school, or the greater community. LITs travel to the Hancock
County Habitat for Humanity site to volunteer, learning about the true impact of community. LITs become very close over the course of the
program, making each challenge and each lesson extremely fun and meaningful.
Counselor In Training (CIT) Program
June 24 – July 14, For
teens entering 11th grade
The CIT program provides teens with all necessary skills to excel
in childcare. Participants will receive Red Cross training and certifications
in First Aid, CPR, and Basic Water Safety. This program provides a fun
environment for teens to learn about serious issues, such as risk management,
group facilitation responsibilities, basic childcare, and learning to meet the
needs of children in a camp setting. The program emphasizes professional
etiquette, working within a hierarchy, and working with peers. The transition
from LIT to CIT should emphasize moving from personal development to using the
skills they have learned at camp to help guide the next generation of campers.
Arriving during Camp Rainbow, a specialty camp for children
affected by cancer, the CITs will stay in a cabin as a group for the first week
to bond as a group. CITs will attend their own classes, while planning and
providing fun activities for the campers to enjoy in the evenings. The
following two weeks CITs will live in cabins with campers, shadowing the
counselors. CITs will shadow classes to learn what it is like to be a
counselor, and participate in break-out sessions to discuss their observations
and plan classes of their own. This program provides teens with a concrete
skill set, sending them away with a solid understanding of how to lead quality programs
and ensure the safety of children and peers. This program not only prepares
teens for the counselor role, but for a number of professional environments.
