STAFF FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Where is Camp Molly?
Camp Molly Molasses is located in Bradley, Maine on Chemo Pond, approximately 15 miles from the Bangor Y. Campers and staff meet at the Bangor Y on Second Street and ride buses to and from camp each day.

What is the typical enrollment?
Camp Molly provides programming for approximately 140 campers each week. Over ten weeks, we see over 400 individual campers. We serve campers ages 5 to 12 years old and both boys and girls. Many of our campers return year after year, and many follow big brothers and sisters to Camp Molly!

What does an average Camp Molly day look like for a counselor versus a program director?
Counselors are assigned to camper groups so a counselor would be with the same group of children for the entire camp day. Program directors see all the camper groups throughout the day/week. Counselors and program directors take turns supervising on the camper buses to and from camp. Upon arrival, counselors take their camper group to their designated area to unpack, apply sunscreen, bug spray, get ready for announcements, etc. Program directors go to their areas (waterfront, ropes course, etc.) and prepare for the day. Everyone has to be present for morning announcements. Then, camper groups rotate through activities. (Each group has a schedule to follow.) So, program directors stay at their program area and facilitate the activities for your groups. Counselors rotate activity to activity with the campers. Both counselors and program directors work the same amount of hours. They just have different job responsibilities. Most program directors are also specialized in their skills (ie. Art, sports, swim, etc) & may require special certification.

What are the camp facilities like?
Camp Molly provides a beautiful setting complete with 1,200 feet of shoreline, forest lands, a ball field, high & low ropes course, and lots of indoor classroom space for those rainy days. Besides the main lodge, which houses our Great Room, kitchen, offices, bathrooms, and 3 large classrooms; we also have a large art cabin and a smaller adventure cabin, the Dahl House. Building began December 2006 on our brand new bath house, which will be a large and much anticipated bathroom facility, as well as changing stalls for our campers!

What are the shifts & what does a typical work week look like?
Counselors and program directors work Monday through Friday, full time. The earliest shift begins at 7am and the latest goes until 5:30pm. Four weeks of the summer are sleepover weeks, so staff will be required to work one-two sleepovers (Thursday evenings to Friday mornings). During sleepover weeks, schedules will be rearranged to accommodate the sleepover and keep work hours at approximately 40/week.

What is the dress code?
At Camp Molly staff are expected to participate and interact with the campers. In order to do this, we must be appropriately dressed for the job. Most staff are required to wear sneakers, or other sturdy shoes. Waterfront staff may wear flip-flops. All staff are required to wear Camp Molly t-shirts on Mondays and Fridays. Basically, we are role models so shorts/skirts must be appropriate length, and shirts should not be too revealing. Also, female staff are required to wear one piece bathing suits. Feel free to ask questions now or during training week.

What about time off and breaks? Is there a place for staff to get away?
There is a staff break room where most staff store their belongings during the day. There is also a refrigerator, microwave, couches, chairs, etc. Staff get a one hour break each day. Days off should be requested ahead of time. Also, because the camp season is only 11 weeks, we typically do not allow entire weeks off, especially for seasonal staff. We talk more about this at training. Feel free to ask questions now or during training week.

What do we do when it rains?
We continue experiencing, enjoying, laughing, learning, growing, building friendships, practicing new skills, and making every moment an adventure! Luckily we have many indoor spaces and utilize those classrooms and cabins if the weather is stormy or rainy!

Is it possible to earn internship credits at Camp Molly Molasses?
Some colleges/universities do allow students to fulfill internships at Camp Molly. If you are interested, please speak with your advisor & then contact us. We would be more than happy to help!

How are the campers divided into groups?
Campers are assigned to their camp groups appropriately according to age and developmental level. Most campers stay with the same camp group and counselors for the remainder of the summer they attend camp. So, for instance, if you have a camper in your unit week 1, they will likely remain in your unit for week 2, 3, and so on. We believe this strengthens the counselor camper relationship. Therefore, as counselors you develop a good understanding of what your campers enjoy, including their goals, challenges, and how to give each child, or young adult, the individualized attention he or she needs! We have seven camper groups at Camp Molly including Eagles, Bobcats, Coyotes, Cougars, Hawks, Moose, and Black Bears.
