CLASS DESCRIPTIONS - LEADERS SCHOOL 2007
ARCHERY — Bow handling and safety procedures, target shooting.
AREA 51 - Practicing basic map and compass skills work with GPS and locate a historical plane crash site in hills of Dedham. (note: this class meets during 3 of your 4 available class sessions).
ARTS & CRAFTS - Try "Macramé with Mike," make a dream-catcher, and other creative crafts.
BOULDERING - An introduction to this exciting close to the ground climbing phenomenon for beginners.
BRIDGING THE GAP — An opportunity to explore Young Leader's thoughts on and the possibilities of their becoming staff members for Leaders School in the future. (Open to graduating leaders only).
CAMP COOKING - Who says camping has to mean oatmeal & pasta? Learn how to use different stoves to create tasty culinary masterworks in the great outdoors and sample your own gourmet treats.
CANOEING - This class is for BEGINNERS ONLY, and not for anyone on the Canoe Trip. Learn two person flat-water canoe handling skills and lingo.
CARTOONING — A serious 2-part class on drawing and cartooning methods and situational development for a possible "LS Cartoon" production! (note: this class meets during 2 of your 4 available class sessions).
COULD I HAVE YOU ATTENTION, PLEASE? - A public speaking class which will meet several times throughout the week; leaders will be expected to assist staff with, dare I say it, 'announcements', during LS Week! (note: this class meets during 2 of your 4 available class sessions).
ENERGY INFUSION THEATRE - Nurture and express your inner thespian using improvisation of all sorts in this theater class like no other.
EXTRA ! EXTRA ! READ ALL ABOUT IT! - Report on the news of the day, as well as publish the Camp Newsletter. If you choose this class, you may have less time for other classes, as it is time-consuming but you can multitask by making notes of other classes you're in to use as news material. (note: this class meets during 2 of your 4 available class sessions).
HARMONICA - Learn to play the harmonica! Harmonicas will be provided; class limit 8. HIGH ROPES - Challenge yourself physically and mentally on our HIGH ropes course, which contains some new elements this year!
INITIATIVES / LOW ROPES — Try to get your group of 12 to stand on a small tree stump (it is not for you to question why...) and other fun activities to expand your mind and abilities.
JUST DO IT! / REVISED - Learn how to balance, exercise, diet, work, and have fun to be in the best shape you can be and learn how to use cross-training to prevent injuries. Bring good running shoes.
KAYAK PADDLING- BEGINNERS ONLY - Learn to feel safe and comfortable paddling a kayak while learning basic kayaking skills on flat-water.
KAYAK ROLLING — advanced "rolling" skills only—NO PADDLING. Only for those experienced kayakers who want to learn to 'roll'. RETRO GAMES - Learn 'old' street games like kick-the-can, skully, Stickball, and others. Learn things to engage mind and body instead of being hypnotized by video games!
RIFLERY/FIRE-ARM SAFETY — Fire-arm handling and safety procedures, target shooting with .22 cal. rifles.
SELF-DEFENSE - Learn some quick ways to defend yourself and escape from threatening situations.
SIM SOCIETY - Values with a social justice spin. Formulate solutions to challenges based upon current events.
SNORKELING - Explore the bottom of Branch Lake! Bring your own mask & snorkel and be confident in your swimming ability.
TEEN TALK — This is a class that gives you the opportunity to discuss pressing issues in the lives of you -- TEENS! Receive advice from other teens (and give it out too), experiencing the same things as you! An entirely teen-lead discussion. It rocks!
THE WORLD AROUND YOU — Explore different cultures, traditions, languages, values, and historical biases.....not everyone thinks, acts, and responds in the same manner. Become a more educated world citizen!
ULTIMATE FRISBEE — Play the internationally renowned group activity that has gained popularity in the U.S.
VALUES - Explore your personal values & ethics, and how they affect the choices you make, the kind of person you want to be, and how you interact in your family and community.
VIDEO-POLAR STYLE — Help chronicle the week's events! The final video production to be presented at the end of LS 2005! (note: this class meets during 3 of your 4 available class sessions).
WANDERING MINSTRELS - Bring your poetic and/or musical talents to write this year's Leaders School Song. Bring instruments, too, if you have them. (note: this class meets during 2 of your 4 available class sessions).
WHY KNOT ! - Learn to tie several useful knots used by sailors, climbers, and those without roof racks.
YOGA - Relax and take a chance learning fundamental yoga skills and practices.
YOU BE THE JUDGE — Learn conflict resolution in a cool, fun, and 'judicious' way! |
