Based on the Sun style of Tai Chi Ch'uan, but also incorporating Yang style forms, Tai Chi for Diabetes is designed to stimulate the qi (life energy) moving through the meridians (energy pathways) of the body which travel through the lungs, spleen and kidneys. Ancient chinese medicine indicated that a deficiency of moisture in these organs caused diabetes. Developed by Dr. Paul Lam (www.taichiforhealthinstitute.org) the Tai Chi for Diabetes form when done properly and with the correct instruction can reduce stress, help control glucose levels and improve the movement of qi through the body. Tai Chi for Diabetes can also provide protection to the joints, improve mobility, relieve pain and stiffness, and improve cardiovascular fitness which will in turn enhance the practitioner's overall health.
Those wishing to participate should wear loose fitting clothes and shoes with good support. This exercise program, at its most extreme is equivalent to a brisk walk.
