We also offer three programs for individuals with specific conditions. These programs help improve the fitness levels of those who have heart conditions, those with arthritis and those who have survived cancer.
Phase III Cardiac Rehab
This is a community-based program in partnership with Eastern Maine Medical Center and is for those who have been affected by a cardiac event and is designed to further improve strength, aerobic capacity, flexibility, and overall movement for participants. Our instructors are CPR/AED certified and are assisted by volunteer medical professionals who are ACLS-certified.
Healthy Bones & Joints
This is a 60-minute class for active older adults living with arthritis or similar conditions that may limit movement. Each class will include 25 minutes of low impact floor aerobics and balance exercises, 20 minutes of strength training, and 15 minutes of flexibility exercises. Exercises are carefully designed to reduce pain and increase range of motion through all the joints in the body in an effort to improve overall wellness.
Regular attendance may help improve strength, balance, and endurance, which can assist in performing daily activities as independently as possible. This is a slower paced class, and all exercises may be performed in chairs if needed or desired, and does not require participants to get down on the floor.
LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA
In cooperation with the LIVESTRONG Foundation, Y-USA has developed this evidence-based fitness program to promote the importance of physical activity after a cancer diagnosis. This 12-week program will be led by specifically trained instructors to individualize the training regime for the individual participants.
